Zoo Atlanta

Zoo Atlanta was rated as one of the worst zoos in the U.S. in the 1980s, after which a team of experts was called in to remedy the zoo’s biggest issues. Under the supervision of a new director, and with the support of the Atlanta community, Zoo Atlanta has since experienced a complete turn-around, and today is regarded as one of the top zoos in the country. Instead of cages consisting of cement floors and metal bars, the animals are now kept in natural enclosures and conservation has become one of the zoo’s main priorities.

At this zoo you can view many different animal species, ranging from gorillas to lions to tigers to amphibians. It is also one of only four zoos in the U.S. that houses giant pandas. A visit to Zoo Atlanta is sure to be loads of fun for the whole family. Here are a few tips that will ensure that you have a great day at the zoo.

Be Aware of Discounts

If you are part of a zoo membership, mention it at the ticket office and you will receive a discount. There are also other discounts on offer; for instance, group discounts or reduced prices for members of the U.S. military. You will also receive a discount if you purchase online tickets in advance of your visit.

Plan the Day of Your Visit

If possible, try to visit the zoo on a weekday, as it is inevitably at its busiest over the weekends. Also, check the zoo’s event calendar for days on which special activities are hosted. Boo at the Zoo days, for instance, are loads of fun for the kids as they get to dress up in costumes and meet popular story-book characters. As you will be walking outside for most of your visit, it is also advisable to check weather reports to try and avoid rainy days.

Use the Map of the Park

As you enter the zoo, grab a map of the park so that you’ll be able to easily navigate your way around. The map also indicates feeding times and keeper talks, which are great ways to see animals interact and hear some valuable and interesting facts from the keepers.

Dress and Pack Wisely

As mentioned before, you’ll be outside for the most part of your day, so be sure to put on sunscreen and wear a hat to protect yourself from the sun. You’ll also want to wear comfy shoes, as the last thing you want is sore feet halfway through your visit. To avoid standing in long queues at food stands, bring your own snacks and drinks, which you can enjoy at the many picnic areas scattered around the zoo.

Take the Kids to the Children’s Zoo Section

The Children’s Zoo section offers many fun activities for kids, including a playground, carnival rides, a splash pad, and train rides. It also offers a petting zoo where the kids can pet animals such as goats and sheep.

A trip to a zoo is a great way to spend the day outdoors with the kids. But the fact that the animals at Zoo Atlanta are kept in natural surroundings and treated with care just makes the experience that much more satisfying.
